ABOUT THE MAYAN KING FIGURE-K’INICH JANAAB’ PAKAL (Ruler of Palenque A.D 615-683)

King Pakal ruled the Mayan city of Palenque for 68 years, which was one of the longest reigns in recorded history. He helped Palenque to become a powerful city , which was because of change in military fortunes and political stability. Growth and peace of the city was because of the Palenque’s military and the victories of battles were very important.  Pakal married to Lady Tz’akb’u Ajaw in 626. Pakal had the royal palace rebuilt and along with it he made new buildings in the city. In 654 there was a defeat that had Palenque’s patron deities thrown down. King Pakal recovered Palenque and unfortunately later died in 683. He was buried in a temple in which, Pakal, had prepared very royal. The curvature at the top of the figure is his hair & is meant to resemble corn silk.., The Maya ideal of beauty is seen in the King’s oval face, elongated nose, and high cheekbones. His tomb was discovered in 1952 & was considered the greatest funeral monument in Mesoamerica. He was also known as “Pacel the Great”.

THE LIMESTONE:

Limestone was a very popular material that Mayans would use to carve their sculptures, monuments, deities, royals & would also use it for their panels to record their history with. It was an abundant material found in the Mayan lowlands & they would use their stone tools to carve into it with. Ancient limestone contains crystals because it is primarily composed of the mineral calcite, which naturally forms crystals when calcium carbonate precipitates out of solution in water, often from the shells and skeletons of marine organisms that accumulated on the ocean floor over time; as layers of these shells compacted, the calcite recrystallized into visible crystals within the limestone rock, creating its crystalline structure. (Please zoom in on crystals in photos 13,14,15)

THE PIN/PENDANT:

Personally speaking, I always have believed that Federico is like a “walking history book”, & is one who has always been proud of his rich cultural Mexican heritage & all it offers.. It's designers like him who keep the historical art of Mexico alive & who brings pieces like this to the public eye, that many would not have known about otherwise!

This was actually created & set in sterling by Federico some 30 or so years ago, so the pendant itself is vintage, while the figure itself is much older! In fact it's ancient!!! Federico found & purchased the carving in Mexico some years before that & from my understanding this could have been carved back during Pakel’s time, but what Federico does know for sure, is that it’s definitely from the “Pre-Colombian” era of time!!! (Prior to 1492).

This can be worn as a pendant & or a pin. Unless it’s pinned to heavy, durable fabric, like an outer coat/jacket, I personally would not use it as a pin, but rather worn as a pendant. Plus with such a historical piece of Mesoamerican ,Mayan history, I would feel it’s better protected if you wear it as a pendant. But that’s your call..

This will hook onto your favorite sterling bead necklace & even though the shepherds hook sits closely to the base, it can be opened more so it can accommodate a larger size bead (If you don't work with metal, a reputable jeweler can easily open the hook up more with a pair of needle nose pliers) I do want to mention that this has a 3..52 ounce weight, so whatever you put it on, has to be strong to accommodate it's weight.. If you zoom in on the 2nd & 3rd photos, it is strung through a 9 mm beaded necklace. So without opening the hook, a 9 mm diameter bead will for sure go through the bale without touching it. From my professional opinion, I think this size pendant will look great with a 22” to maybe no more than a 26” necklace to keep both in balance.(Michelle Jameson hand made Navajo Pearl Necklace is under the “Necklace” category)
