Vintage 1980's Santo Domingo Ke~Wa Pueblo~ 3 strand Hand Cut Melon and Olive Shell Heishi Necklace
Vintage 1980's Santo Domingo Ke~Wa Pueblo~ 3 strand Hand Cut Melon and Olive Shell Heishi Necklace
I bought this back in the mid-80's (1983 to be exact!) right on the Santo Domingo Pueblo when on my way to Albuquerque..This was from my personal collection that I no longer wear.
The Ke~Wa Pueblo people are known for their lapidary skills by taking various stones & shells & then hand cutting them down from the whole shell or rock.
This is designed with 3 graduated strands of all hand cut peach colored Melon Shell roundel style beads & little 2.5 mm cuts of olive shell that is used in between.Toward the neckline the 3 strands of Melon stop where there is a slab of turquoise & then the very finely small hand cut olive shell continues where it ends with a sterling cone .It has a hook & eye closure & sterling cones & strung on strong wax like string..There are textured silver toned beads that are used as spacers & I believe they are plated, since you see tones of copper. But,does not take away from the look!..
