EARRING PROVENANCE:
I am extremely honored to have been offered these exquisite vintage 14k gold/diamond earrings that once belonged to the late "Ellen Belber-Jiménez" & come from her estate.. Ellen was the wife of famed artist “Federico Jimenez” & were married for 56 years until her unfortunate passing..(Please see my vast inventory of jewelry by Federico in every category!)
Ellen & Federico met down in Oaxaca in the mid-60's while she was there working with the UCLA Oaxaca Market Study Research Project & Federico was involved at that time in writing articles on Oaxaca's traditional Arts & Culture.. Ellen lived & breathed the beautiful art of Oaxaca, the amazing jewelry throughout Mexico (With the focus on Oaxaca) , the hand woven textiles, the clothing, the food, etc. & like Federico, could tell you everything about each of them & was highly skilled on each subject. A skilled curator, Ellen sat on the board of the "AUTRY MUSEUM' in LA, till the time of her death.
Ellen collected quite the collection, where everything she owned was worthy enough to be in a Museum. (Yes, her pieces are that good! )Her tastes for Oaxaca jewelry were exquisite & owned nothing BUT the finest that Oaxaca offers.. These charming diamond & gold Oaxaca earrings are just one example of her fine tastes for the beautiful jewelry she owned. There are select pieces of Ellen's that are still housed at their museum in Oaxaca that shares her & her husbands name ("Museo Belber Jimenez" ) which by the way, has one of the most phenomenal, historical collections of jewelry & textiles known to Oaxaca, as well as throughout many regions of Mexico..
COPY/PASTE BELOW:
These have been in storage for the last 50+ years & like her husband, anything you get that belonged to Ellen, always hold a higher value.

STATUS DURING THIS TIME PERIOD:
Goldsmiths living and working back then, crafted jewelry by hand and took painstaking care to ensure that the jewelry that was made, was at it's finest for the wearer. The jewelry that was worn was a symbol of status and personal style. Financial status back then was not only determined by the size house you lived in,but also was determined by the clothes you wore & the jewelry they had & of course the materials in which the jewelry was made with..(I.E. Gold, Silver, Diamonds & other precious gemstones) The size of the jewelry also said a lot about how much money and status you had.. Being these are made with gold, along with having all these diamonds ,the original owner of these no doubt, had to be wealthy and would have been considered "refined" & in a higher class in society.

ROSE CUT DIAMONDS:
Made with Rose cut diamonds, which were highly sought after during the 1500’s to the early 1900’s.They were extremely popular in the Georgian/Victorian era & are known for their minimal amount of facets & also which are cut with a ‘flat’ bottom, as opposed to the pointed diamond that we normally see & because of this flat base, it allows them to sit lower in the setting then other cuts. They have a very ‘raw-organic’ look & because they didn’t have diamond cutting machines back then, each diamond was totally cut by hand!.
Especially during the last 5-10 years, Rose cuts have been making a big comeback, mainly because of their vintage aesthetic. So if you’re somebody who desires a very alternative looking, more organic look to your diamonds, rose cut diamonds are the way to go!
THE EARRINGS:
Designed in a tear drop shape drop design, I find the overall design of these to be unique in regards to the way the design of the gold was created. Both the tops & the drop are made in a “double step” raised- looped-circular design (See photos).I do believe that on both sections, the pattern in which the diamonds sit was created 1st, which then dictated the gold work.
On the small round top, sits one rose cut diamond that measures roughly 3.5 mm in size (0.13”),whereas on the tear drop shaped drop, there are 9 rose cut diamonds that measure about 3 mm each (0.12” ea.) Because all the diamonds were cut by hand, no 2 have the same facet.
Finalizing the design are 3 dangles that each have 2 diamonds, with the top diamond being super tiny, while at the very bottom, this diamond measures about the same as the rest. (see photo 9)
These are extremely elegant, very feminine & comfortable in weight, not to forget about all the history they have! They give off a nice sparkle as they hit the light & based on their weight, you may not even know you have them on! Would make a fabulous gift for the woman who loves vintage gold/rose cut diamond jewelry!!
