When the thought of recreating some of the most incredible mosaic style turquoise jewelry that was worn in the Mel Gibson movie "APOCALYPTO" came to mind, there was no other mosaic artist I knew I could count on to know they'd be done right,than by my friend from the Kewa Pueblo "WARREN NIETO".. I am honored to have such an artist as Warren who immediately knew what I was talking about & he couldn't have made a more STUNNING looking earring by giving us the best jewelry from 2 separate cultural worlds!!!

For those of you who don't know, the ancient Mayans & the Santo Domingo Pueblo people have a couple things in common & that's for the fact that both used/use turquoise & both did/do excellent mosaic work, which as you can see, comes with ease for a artist like Warren! So these are Kewa Pueblo made, but with a “Mayan” edginess!

Being the true artist he is without copying others, it wasn't about doing them the same exact way, but rather giving you the "Style".. If you've had the chance to see the movie, you can see this style earring being worn by the Mayan leader when he held the heart of the captured in his hand & held it up toward the sun. This particular scene showed the leaders wearing some of the most AMAZING mosaic turquoise jewelry, along with having amazing hairstyles!!

THE EARRINGS:
These are made where the oval tops are mosaic inlaid with various shaped green Nevada turquoise in the tops interior. What I love about these, is their symbolic meaning that Warren will always put somewhere within his pieces. If you zoom in on photo 4, you will see how Warren added a symbolic Native American touch by adding 4 blue cuts to create a '4 directional' pattern. In life, the 4 of everything has great meaning, for example: the 4 seasons, birth through old age ,the 4 directions ( east,west,south,north) & so on...Also the slivers of orange apple coral that create the square in the center, actually was put there to mean how the world is actually square & not round as we think...Raised in the center is a rectangular 16 mm x 11 mm cut of turquoise..

The 1" square cut stick like dangles are anchored by way of waxed string which give these a ancient Anasazi feel & if you zoom in on photos, but especially photo 5, you will see how the dangles are connected to the circular top with waxed string.. This style was used by the Anasazi in the Chaco Canyon region before modern day sterling jump rings were used & which come from the time period around 900-1300 AD!! The string is tied in a knot on the backside & then burned to secure it.
