THE GRASSHOPPER MINE:

TheGrasshopper Turquoise Mine is in Lander County, Nevada. It’s no surprise that the material from this mine is among some of the rarest and most collectible turquoise/faustite in the world. Similar to other notable mines like Damele, Carico Lake, Orvil Jack, Northern Lights, and Stennich, Grasshopper is unique for producing faustite and turquoise as a secondary mineral with no variscite.

The mine earned its name where it’s said that during the initial visit to the claim, an abundance of vibrant green grasshoppers were seen jumping around, inspiring its memorable name. The mine’s production is incredibly low, having been worked in the 1970s when there was little market demand for green turquoise and faustite. Consequently, miners took the blue stones and left the green in the tailings. The mine has not been worked since then and is unlikely to be mined for turquoise ever again.

EARRING PROVENANCE:

These came through my store by way of a Santa Fe’an couple who were downsizing on pieces that were no longer being worn & she was telling me she bought them in Santa Fe back in the 80’s at a Native American store here. They were kept in a safe.

THE EARRINGS:

Yes, your eyes are seeing right & yes, this turquoise naturally comes in this vibrant lime green color! Hard to believe, but it’s true! In fact, it’s because of the rocks unique, vibrant lime green color, that really was one of the 1st things that really captured my eye! The color is truly AMAZING & It’s absolutely gorgeous! The rocks are not dyed or treated in any kind of way,but come out of the ground that color! If you zoom in on the turquoise photos, you will also see the pyrite in them!

They have a really “artsy” vibe to them & are totally made by hand. They are made in a 3 tiered style, where the tops are literally “free hand cut” into round disks & which have hand melted beads that are then interspersed throughout the top of the This top is used to anchor the turquoise section & the turquoise tier anchors the luminous golden orange color ‘sunstone’ bottom tier. The latter has a traditional Navajo 1970’s leaf design. Both the turquoise & sunstone are embraced by a serrated sawtooth bezel.

PLEASE READ BEFORE PURCHASING:
*****I do not consider myself a 'professional photographer" but I do try my hardest to give you photos that are 'realistic" in color as much as I can. And even though the photos show the color to be fairly accurate, you still have to consider your monitor screen, which can vary and also plays a role in how vibrant or less vibrant as something appears. If you need more photos, in different areas of lighting, please let me know! *****

To give you close up photos, pictures tend to make the item look much more larger & everything is more magnified than in actuality. So to get an accurate idea of how big these are, please either check them out being worn to get a rough idea (photo 2) or you can pull out a tape measure & compare to my given measurements above.
