ABOUT THE ARTIST: Margarito Mondragón:

World renown Santero Margarito Mondragón is a New Mexico native who carries on the traditional art known to New Mexico & especially in the northern part of New Mexico area. Born in Ocate NM, but raised in Las Vegas,NM, Margarito happens to be apart of the prestigious “SPANISH COLONIAL ARTS SOCIETY“ who puts on our yearly Santa Fe Spanish Market..

Margarito’s calling came from his days when he was working as a heavy equipment operator with the New Mexico Highway Department. The story goes, that on one snowy winter day while bringing in a load of firewood, Margarito saw the face of Christ in a piece of wood. He then proceeded to carve his 1st “BULTO” (dimensional Saint statue) with a knife & a screwdriver & that’s when he said goodbye to his day job! Now he continues to focus on one piece at a time & lets the wood ‘speak’ to him & what ever the wood says, that ‘s what’s carved!

Although descending from a historical line of Spanish Colonial artisans that came into New Mexico centuries ago,Margarito is actually a self taught artist. He makes his own varnish & pigments that are derived from the earth & still uses the same traditional methods that came out of the 1600-1700’s time period. He prepares his dyes, pigments & varnishes from natural vegetable & mineral materials. After carving the image, he then mixes & applies 4 coats of “Gesso”. And finally ,he paints the image & completes it by applying natural beeswax.
