"Don't just stand there, let's get to it, Strike a pose, there's nothing to it!" Madonna (Vogue)

THE SUNGLASSES:
When it comes to ‘unique & different “ Puebloan mosaic art, there’s only one artist that comes to mind & that is the name “JOLENE BIRD”.

While leaving buyers, as well as judges in disbelief for her work, Jolene has built a name in the industry for her time consuming mosaic art, which has blessed her with many 1st place award ribbons. These glasses are the prime example, where you just won’t find other artists from the Kewa village doing.

They are uniquely different than anything you may find online or in a Southwestern/Santa Fe jewelry gallery and just might be some of the coolest sunglasses out there! How many people can you say that you know, that own a pair of Native made real turquoise sunglasses!!???

They're made with all the traditional techniques known to the Kewa Puebloan people, but are SO ultra 2025! And it’s artwork like these glasses, where you find the real beauty of Jolene's work, since everything she comes in contact with, she literally see's as a future work of art! (Read "About Jolene" at the bottom)

Made with a very slight "Cat Eye" design, the sunglasses were used as a base for Jolene's mosaic inlay work. Taking from various colored rocks and shells, she then cuts & shapes every tiny piece that intricately lays atop of the acrylic (plastic?) frame that then follows the form of the entire eyeglass. These have an array of various materials known to the village, so they’re nice & colorful!! You can pair these with just about any southwestern jewelry collection & then pull from any of the colors!

These are made for more of a petite to a average size frame that’s on the smaller end of average & I say that because I know that I am petite & they fit perfect, but with a little play of movement. To see if these would fit, I suggest you take a pair of glasses you own & measure the areas you see in the photo 10 & then compare to my measurements.. The 5.75" width you see in photo 10,is taken on the 'inside" of the arm that sits against your face, rather than measuring the exterior of the arm, since that would give an inaccurate measurement because of the mosaic stone.. Jolene told me that these have a 400 UV protection rating, which is the highest UV protection rating offered.

MEET THE ARTIST: JOLENE BIRD
There's a reason why that with every Native American juried/judged event that Jolene attends, she will usually win either in "Best of Show, the big Grand Prize or comes in 1st place & when you see the unique type of work she puts out, you'll understand why! She has gone on to win awards for her amazing mosaic pots/vases & I have been honored at carrying many, which have all sold out.

Incorporating what has been passed down through oral history & from generation after generation, Jolene puts her own unique twists on things & pours her heart & soul into everything she puts her hands on & the judges for these Native American events are always left in disbelief because the items she brings to the table, are something you'll never see among other Puebloan artists when it comes to the "Art of Mosaic or for "Puebloan Jewelry".

I believe with Jolene, it's not about just being another Puebloan mosaic artist, but it's the way & WHAT she decides to mosaic! She has even gone on to making a chess set, mosaic sunglasses, mosaic chairs, a mini sized mosaic inlaid Volkswagen Beetle car and even went as far as fully mosaic inlaying a Gibson guitar!! You name it, Jolene will mosaic it!

The young Jolene learned this art from her grandparents (who were also mosaic artists) but lucky for Jolene, because it was her Grandmother Anita, who told her to "seek a new direction" & that is when she went from 'traditional' & took a more "contemporary' approach by starting to design these very high end quality pieces, while gaining the respect of many Native American scholars. Moving forward, she has surpassed 100's of artists from the pueblo.

Jolene lives in the Kewa Village with her immediate family, who she is now passing on everything she knows about this Ancestral Puebloan art form & works especially very close with her artisan son Charles Bird, whose jewelry you can find in my listings !

Jolene's work is highly collectible & gives us a historical ancestral Puebloan past, but with a contemporary edginess !
