Art isn’t just about using a canvas ,paints & brushes, but art rather, comes in a variety of mediums, whether it’s sculpture, architecture, dance or music, where you see a picture or story told. However, in this case we are talking jewelry, where we experience the beauty of ‘Lapidary Art” which is an art in itself, where the artist will take from nature who has provided us with a vast assortment of colorful stones & shells, that are then meticulously cut & shaped by the artist in order to “Paint” a magnificent picturesque portrait subject matter.

This too is art, but only here, we’re talking about art being done in a mosaic inlay form of shell, stone, and metal. Considered the epitome of Zuni inlay, this bolo is truly a work of Zuni art & it’s pieces such as this, that make our heads spin or have us grasping for air! And it’s also pieces such as this, that make Zuni inlay so desirable & high in demand!

THE BOLO:

This is a depiction of a Ceremonial Chief Dancer & one of the 1st things you can’t help but notice, is the over the top intricate design with exceptional attention to detailing, which reflect the artists deep respect for Zuni tradition & culture. This bolo is a testament to the artists exceptional skill & artistry while combining traditional Zuni elements with lapidary techniques.

He’s made mostly with the most gorgeous pearlescent white mother of pearl that oozes this amazing shimmer & with each cut, has the most elegant beveling in all the right places. If you zoom in on the photos, you will also notice how the artist captured the dancers “movement”, where one leg is off the ground, knee up in the air ,while the mermaid like right leg, standing firm. Seeing him dance, is like being right there at the Zuni Pueblo, watching the dance for yourself!

Standing in a statuesque 5” tall form & if you zoom in on photo 5,you will see the dancer has Buffalo Horns on his head. His head is adorned as well with a large & long trailing Chief feather headdress, that’s made in a tri color design of mother of pearl, black jet(?) & has tips of round cuts of turquoise. His hair is long & is wrapped in ponytails, while his right upper arm has a armband wheel of turquoise that also matches the bolo’s tips. He is shown wearing a “Ketoh” bracelet on his wrist while holding a tomahawk ax in his hand.

The dancer is strung through a 38” long black bolo cord that has about a 4 mm round diameter. It has a clasp adjuster similar to the Bennett C31 clasp & so you can wear it high or low! The tips look to be Sleeping Beauty turquoise & are a vivid blue.

A WORD:

I want to mention that if the tips are not ever facing the right way, how you fix this is: you release the adjustable clasp & turn and twist the leather cord so the tips are then facing front. Not letting them move while holding them in place, you then want to tighten the clasp. Also the way to make the cord lay straight & not curved (Especially after shipping!) is you can either take a warm damp cloth & run it down the leather to straighten it. You can also use a leather conditioning cloth. You can get leather conditioning wipes at just about any grocery store,Amazon, shoe repair, etc..

PLEASE zoom in on all photos since they play a major role to my description. The detail in this, is out of this world incredible!!
