THE ANCIENT NAJA SYMBOL:

Nothing spells out Santa Fe & the southwest,more than the "Naja" symbol. This crescent shape has some serious history & dates way back to the time when the Spanish arrived in the Americas in 1492. This crescent shape was worn on their horses’ bridles for ornamentation.. However, this symbol actually dates further back to the northern African people who brought the symbol into Spain when they conquered the country in 711 AD and ruled there for the following eight centuries. It is said that before the Navajos became silversmiths, they removed the metal crescents from the Spaniards horses’ bridles, possibly during raids and then strung them on rawhide to wear around their necks, subsequently becoming symbols of wealth and status since they were especially difficult to acquire during that time.

THE NECKLACE:

This necklace isn't about any elaborate, over the top sterling work, but what it is about, is that it's done in a very simple sort of way, where the sole focus is on nothing but the Coral & the Naja, no less, no more,. that's it! There's nothing to distract from these 2, since they play a dominate role in the design & their role is to grab all the spotlight & attention!

Its made with nothing but oval cuts of coral that come in various sizes & various depths of color. This is not your 'red-red' Ox Blood coral, but more like various hues that go from "medium reds to salmon" colors, which allows it to have the contrast it does. There are 26 cuts of coral in the neckline alone (13 per side).The Naja is on the daintier side in comparison to some naja's out there that you'll find on squash blossom necklaces. All the coral is set in a contemporary finished sterling.

It has a very comfortable weight,so for those who can't wear any weight on the neck, you may find this one to be pretty comfortable! (See weights below) It's also has that "just right" size, where you want your jewelry to be seen & admired, but not from 2 miles away! I would call this a “Non-Dramatic-Understated” type of necklace.

And lastly,even though this has a 'signature' southwest design, this can be worn anyplace, anywhere, in or out of the southwest, because of it's simple appeal & contemporary aesthetic. Would make a great gift!

This Coral is from "Old Stock" since Coral is now on the rare list & can no longer be fished, nor brought in the USA.(These reasons are reflected in the price)Because of supply, buyers are buying what they can for these reasons, since everyday the price seems to go higher and higher... Coral has gotten so ridiculously expensive, which makes it unaffordable for many artists to even consider buying and especially for these premium grades. I know in fact many artists that are now hesitating whether to buy it or not since the price for a few carats doesn't go very far! In the last few years, Coral's cost has skyrocketed up to 500% & compared to a few years ago when it was at about $250 a gram, it is now over $1000 a gram & the less availability, the higher the price will increase, which will always allow it to be a good investment.
