THE TURQUOISE PROVENANCE: These “Gem Quality” cuts came from the late Larry Cooley’s collection ..For those of you that follow me, know the turquoise collection I have had in the past of his & and the inventory I presently stock. (See all 4 of our earring categories, necklaces, rings, pendants, pins, etc.) But for those who aren’t yet familiar with the name, Larry was one of the biggest turquoise vendors in the industry & had a collection any vendor or designer would die to own. The turquoise he had, was nothing but the finest, since he came from an era that only sought out having the best that each mine offered.

Designers like Federico considered him their “vendor of choice” when actively seeking out the highest quality turquoise to use in their own designs. His turquoise was mined decades ago, when natural turquoise was available & had nothing but premium-gem/high grades that didn’t need to be stabilized.

When Larry passed, his whole collection was up for sale, but because of Federico’s long time standing with him & his family, the family then sold it all to Federico, but it didn’t come without paying a top dollar price.(This quality is reflected in the price) Since his turquoise was mined decades ago, many of these mines have since closed ,which has now put them on the “RARE” list. And for these earrings, you can’t even touch this type of quality without paying top dollar per carat for any of it. And especially when they have impeccable quality like these earrings have!

RARE RED MOUNTAIN SPIDERWEB TURQUOISE (CENTER OVAL CUT)

This Natural turquoise comes from Nevada, located in Lander County. The Red Mountain mine has produced some of the finest high quality turquoise in the industry. This valuable turquoise is so premium that you often find it set in gold and used by only the best metalsmiths., since it is that fine! Red Mountain is known for it’s ‘Hardness”. (Mohs scale of hardness) When we speak of hardness in turquoise, means that it doesn’t need stabilization in order to be cut by a lapidarian. So the harder the turquoise, the higher the quality, in other words. Red Mountain spiderweb is a very collectable material.

THE SLEEPING BEAUTY TURQUOISE: (CLUSTER CUTS)

This mine closed some years back & ever since closing, has only increased it’s value & especially in these gem/high grades like you find in these earrings. Yes, you can still get Sleeping Beauty, but is so picked over, that now they are presently treating low grade cuts that are soft & chalky in order to give them hardness so they can be cut by a lapidarian, as well as to enhance their color.

This turquoise is known for it’s vivid, almost unreal blue, that has a vibrancy that can leave you speechless! Sleeping Beauty turquoise is not only known for it’s wonderful vivid blue color, but it’s also known for it’s lack of matrix, which to some beginners, think of it as ‘fake’, which is far from the truth!!

These are from Federico’ s “One of a Kind” collection where only one pair was made, so they can only be found here at Plata de Santa Fe Jewelry. If you’re all about the quality, rather than the quantity, then these are an earring that are fine enough to be passed on from generation to generation! They’re like “diamonds of turquoise” for the ears!

Artist name & recognition, turquoise quality, cost per carat for this quality, amount of carats, turquoise availability, sterling cost & artists time are all reflected in price.  Anything made with Cooley turquoise will also demand a higher price due to rarity, quality & availability.
