CARLOS GUTIERREZ Black Onyx & Pearls Filigree Tehuana (Juchiteca) Earrings
CARLOS GUTIERREZ Black Onyx & Pearls Filigree Tehuana (Juchiteca) Earrings
Looking like lace or embroidery, these have a very Spanish Colonial look... This very abstract style of earring is known to be worn by "Tehuana"women (Juchiteca ) of Oaxaca, which is the style/region that Frida Kahlo made so popular & put on the map for their costumes & jewelry. This type of jewelry from Oaxaca, is actually derived from 18th century Spanish & French influences.
Their shape & style, are a cross between the Oaxaca's"El Eme"(M) earring and the Yalalag Cross(If not familiar, please Google).
Taking approximately 3 days to make, the base is made from scratch & the filigree being made of super fine sterling wire. The wire has a circular pattern & not once, do you see the pattern losing form.Surrounding the pearls,Carlos added a 'diamond cut" technique, that will sparkle when the light or sun hits them.Because the wire is so delicate, this is what allows them to be more 'wearable' & even though they are a larger size, they are of a lighter weight.
