To appreciate how these earrings came about, it may help to know whose collection they were inspired from:
Many may have heard of William Spratling,(who was called by many, the "Father of Taxco Silver") but unless you're in the business in regards to the history of vintage Mexican jewelry, then many may not have heard of Mexico City's FRED DAVIS..(April 17, 1877 - March 7, 1961)
Yes, we place much focus & credit on Spratling & the colonial town of Taxco for the jewelry that was being produced back in this time period, but actually Fred Davis had been operating an antiquities and folk art shop, but from a slightly earlier time period. Davis was an early collector and dealer in pre-Columbian and Mexican folk art and his shop was a place where Mexican Modern artists who were interested in pre-Columbian and folk art, often met. Davis was all about fine workmanship & inspired his artist friends to produce jewelry & silver ware that was nothing less, than the best.
Davis was born and raised in Illinois & came to Mexico about 1910 and it was during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920),that many Mexican antiques came on the market. After 1920, as stability returned and Americans became interested in Mexico, Davis's shop attracted collectors from everywhere world wide. Artists of the emerging “Mexican school” were interested in both historical and contemporary folk art, so they also gravitated to Davis's shop. Davis was among the first to collect, display and sell their work. He exhibited work by Frida Kahlo's muralist husband Diego Rivera plus many others. Anything of Fred's to this day, is considered "Highly Collectible".
THE EARRINGS:
So with all this said, these earrings are a replica that came from Fred Davis's collection (See photo 3 & 4) The earrings are quite large & are just as about wide as they are long. Atop of heavier gauge, lacy filigree wire, are little 'folk art' style Mexican doves, flowers & gloved hands which are often witnessed in Mexican jewelry. The latter actually represent "Friendship, power, giving, healing", whereas the palomas represent eternal love.
The only difference in these compared to Davis's, is for the fact that his had a curved ear wire for the ear, which would force the earring to face sideways, (See photo 3 & 4) whereas these have a floral top that has a post back & face forward. These are made with heavier gauge sterling filigree wire, which give weight to the earring, so the post is still going to be easier on the ear, than the wire with this big of an earring..
Please pay attention to the weight before purchasing & if you know what weight your ears can tolerate, all the better. They can also be easily turned into a clip earring! (You would provide this.) If you click on “Women’s Jewelry” then in the drop down click on “Other-Concho Belts Plus More”, you’ll find a product I carry called “LOBE WONDERS” that are made specifically to take the weight off the ear & places the weight on the adhesive tab they’re made with.
