Catrina is the 'elegant skull',who only dresses in her 'over the top' large hat befitting the 'upper class' outfit of a European woman of her time.She was created by Jose Guadalupe Posada who was a cartoon lithographer & was close friends to Frida & Diego back in the day & it was actually Diego that got Jose more known than he was.

She is offered as a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who, Posada felt were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolution era. She, in particular, has become an icon of the Mexican Día de los muertos!
