Kewa Puebloan Artist-JOLENE BIRD-Naturally Formed Orange Spiny Oyster Shell/Turquoise Accents-Elasticized Stretch Bracelet-Fits Many Wrist Sizes!
Kewa Puebloan Artist-JOLENE BIRD-Naturally Formed Orange Spiny Oyster Shell/Turquoise Accents-Elasticized Stretch Bracelet-Fits Many Wrist Sizes!
THE BRACELET:
Leaving all this gorgeous colored shell's natural attributes, while only cutting the shell into elongated marquise type shapes, Kewa Puebloan artist Jolene Bird made this by taking the whole Spiny Oyster shell & then shaping each into panels.
The shell has this beautiful southwestern peachy coral color that can remind you of the color that many paint their walls when they want to do a southwestern color theme. Leaving the softened rounded tips that give this shell it's "Spiny" name, these as you can see are raised above the base of the shell. (See photos & especially photos 5 & 6) You will also see all the texture, the ridges, the holes & everything else that you don't normally see once the shell is cut into cabochons.. Because of the natural form of the shell, the panels are not perfectly sized, but rather vary in size. Placed sporadically, are 5 little oval cuts of turquoise that are placed atop of the shell. . The shell is then hand drilled so the 2 elastic cords can be threaded though the panels that allow it to stretch.
SIZING:
Because of the elastic cord, this stretches to accommodate a variety of wrist sizes & can fit a medium sized wrist up to an XXL wrist. Relaxed, this measures 9" from end to end (This is NOT your wrist size) and the larger the wrist, this will stretch to accommodate your size. I am very small boned with a 5-1/2" wrist & it falls down to the center of my hand. So woman who are small boned & or that have a wrist the size of mine, unfortunately can't wear this where it should sit on the arm.

PLEASE NOTE:
*****I do not consider myself a 'professional photographer" but I do try to give you photos that are 'realistic" in color, just so you're not shocked, nor disappointed when you get the piece. I find photographing anything with 'yellow' in it, (orange, green) can come up a little more vivid than other colors,so please take this into consideration. I photographed this in front of 2 different background colors,so please go through all photos to see ANY variation. A monitor's color clarity can also make a difference!

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Incorporating what has been passed down through oral history & from generation after generation, Jolene puts her own unique twists on things & pours her heart & soul into everything she puts her hands on & the judges for these Native American events are always left in disbelief because the items she brings to the table, are something you'll never see among other Puebloan artists when it comes to the "Art of Mosaic or for "Puebloan Jewelry".
I believe with Jolene, it's not about just being another Puebloan mosaic artist, but it's the way & WHAT she decides to mosaic! She has even gone on to making a chess set, mosaic sunglasses, mosaic chairs, a mini sized mosaic inlaid Volkswagen Beetle car and even went as far as fully mosaic inlaying a Gibson guitar!! You name it, Jolene will mosaic it!
The young Jolene learned this art from her grandparents (who were also mosaic artists) but lucky for Jolene, because it was her Grandmother Anita, who told her to "seek a new direction" & that is when she went from 'traditional' & took a more "contemporary' approach by starting to design these very high end quality pieces, while gaining the respect of many Native American scholars. Moving forward, she has surpassed 100's of artists from the pueblo.
Jolene lives on the Kewa Pueblo with her immediate family, who she is now passing on everything she knows about this Ancestral Puebloan art form & works very closely with her artisan son Charles Bird, whose jewelry you can find in my listings !
Jolene's work is highly collectible & gives us a historical ancestral Puebloan past, but with a contemporary edginess !
